Parkade Elementary’s fourth annual Kindergarten Mother’s Tea was held Friday, May 6, at 2:40 p.m. The celebration began in the gym and then moved to the cafeteria.

“Kindergarten Mother’s Tea originally started as a music program for kindergarteners, but now is combined with mother’s day,” kindergarten teacher Brenda Sieber said.

The boys and girls sang songs they learned with their mothers in the gym. Then they moved to the cafeteria where they had cookies and punch or lemonade the children shared with their moms.

The kindergartners made gifts for their mothers including stories, drawings and potted plants.

Sieber said Parkade Elementary had several businesses donate materials for the event. Walmart donated a $25 gift card, Kaldi’s Coffee, Hy-Vee and Gerbes Supermarket donated cookies, and The Home Depot donated flowerpots and plants.

The Hickman High School math honor society Mu Alpha Theta held its third Kewpie Math Classic on Saturday, April 9. The Kewpie Math Classic is a math competition for Columbia students in sixth through eighth grades.

Registration for the competition is free. Mu Alpha Theta sponsor Deanna Wasman said they tried using it as a fundraiser one year but didn’t have a good response.

“Now it’s our service project,” Wasman said. “Bake sales are our fundraisers.”

Hickman math teacher Cheryl Lightner said they started the competition because they “saw a gap” after the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics moved their middle school math contest to Springfield.

“We want to promote having fun with math,” Wasman said. Continue reading

Columbia Mother Singers might be one of kind. Mother Singers groups were formed all over the country through the national PTA decades ago, but Sally Stucker, president of the Columbia Mother Singers, said that to her knowledge the Columbia group is the only one left.

Columbia Mother Singers are a group of 45 women and was formed 65 years ago. The group was scheduled to perform at Parkade Elementary School on Thursday morning, March 10.

Stucker said the purpose of Columbia Mother Singers is “to share a love of music and to entertain and educate the kids on different kinds of music.”

Columbia Mother Singers tour all Columbia elementary schools over 10 weeks. They perform at two schools per week singing a wide array of music including folk and patriotic songs. Continue reading
