Thirteen Columbia Area Career Center students from Rock Bridge and Hickman high schools are eligible to advance to the DECA International Career Development Conference in late April. These finalists were part of a group of 41 Columbia students who competed at the DECA state competition March 13 through March 15 at the Lake of the Ozarks. More than 1,600 Missouri high school students competed at state.

DECA is an international program for high school students that teaches business and marketing skills. Many DECA members go on to study business management or marketing in college or enter the workforce in related jobs, CACC DECA Advisor Scott Fuenfhausen said. Fuenfhausen himself worked in advertising for 17 years before becoming a teacher, marketing everything from Twinkies to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Unlike after-school sports, which are extracurricular, DECA is co-curricular, Fuenfhausen said. Classwork and competition preparation are combined.

“Everything they learn in my class applies directly to competition,” he said. “Before competition comes around, the students are basically learning marketing principles they will use in competition.”

DECA competition is two fold. In each category, a 100-question exam tests marketing knowledge. Then, in the role play section, students are given a situation for which they must find a solution and present it for judging. A student’s final score is totaled from both parts of the competition. There are both group and individual competitions.

Because of some students’ previous commitments, six of the 13 eligible students will travel to Orlando, Fla., to compete at ICDC April 30 through May 3:
-Shane Kuse, Rock Bridge — Fourth place in Principles of Marketing
-Sara Sabulsky, Hickman — Second place in Financial Analysis
-Adam Kidwell, Hickman — Second place in Financial Analysis
-Spencer Claiborne, Hickman — First place in Quick Serve Restaurant
-Michael Richardson, Hickman — District vice president, voting delegate
-Audrey Schutte, Hickman — Leadership delegate
