Neighborhood churches make plans for Easter

The Blue Ridge-Oakland neighborhoods are home to eight different churches, and many of them are making special plans with Easter coming up on Sunday, April 24. Below is an overview of the churches in the area with their service times, location and Easter arrangements.

1) Faith Baptist Church
Address: 3909 Brown Station Road
Denomination: Independent Baptist
Service Times: Sunday school will be held at 9:45 a.m. Services will be held at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. On Easter, breakfast will be served instead of Sunday school.

Easter Plans: A Candy Scramble will be held at the church on Saturday, April 23, for children ages 3 to 12. The free event will feature bounce houses and prize giveaways, including bikes and hams. Registration is at 10:30 a.m., and the Candy Scramble begins at 11 a.m.

2) Grace Bible Church
Address: 601 Blue Ridge Road
Denomination: Non-denominational
Service Times: Classic services will be held at 8:15 a.m. Sunday school will be held at 9:35 a.m. Contemporary services will be held at 11 a.m.

3) Blue Ridge Christian Church
Address: 2400 Blue Ridge Road
Denomination: Restoration Movement Church
Service Time: 10 a.m.

4) First Church of the Nazarene
Address: 2601 Blue Ridge Road
Service Times: Sunday school will be held at 9:30 a.m. Services will be held at 10:45 a.m.

Easter Plans: Sunrise services will be held at Oakland Park Shelter #3, located in Albert-Oakland Park, 1900 Blue Ridge Road. To find it, drive past Oakland Junior High School and take a left. Breakfast at the church will follow at 8 a.m.

“We’re a holiness church,” Associate Pastor Tom Garrison said. “We have a really exciting service, but not overly exciting. The people here are very loving. That’s one of the first things I noticed.”

The church has been at its present location for over 20 years, and about 120 to 130 people attend services on Sundays.

5) Emmanuel Baptist Church
Address: 3100 Pioneer Drive
Service Times: Bible study will be held at 9:30 a.m. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m.

6) Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church
Address: 4540 N Oakland Gravel Road
Denomination: Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod

Easter Plans: Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. followed by an Easter Songfest at 10 a.m. with extra hymns and a sermon.

“We’re conservative and follow the old ways with a traditional service,” Pastor Micah Ernst said. “We teach the Bible as is. We let it speak for itself.”

The church was founded 36 years ago and has 45 members.

7) Heritage Baptist Church
Address: 4470 N. Highway 763
Denomination: Southern Baptist
Service Times: Bible study with a fellowship meal will be held at 9:30 a.m. Worship will be held at 10:45 a.m.

“We’re not high church,” Pastor John Martin said. “We blend the traditional and the contemporary. We want to help people learn about the Bible, learn about Christ.”

The church is six years old and has 45 members.

5) Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses
Address: 301 W. Smiley Lane
Service Times: English congregation meetings will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday and at 9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Spanish congregation meetings will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday and at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
