SCHOOLS: SMITHTON MIDDLE SCHOOL

“Radio Plays,” a show that has been in the works for six weeks at Smithton Middle School, will be performed Friday, March 11 in the school’s auditorium. The show comprises a collection of stories and commercials written in the style of 1940s radio shows, Amy Drtina, director of the musical department at Smithton Middle School, said.
The show was originally scheduled for performance on Feb. 25, but the recent snows were cause for delay.
Auditions for “Radio Plays” were open to all sixth- and seventh-graders who attend Smithton Middle School. Drtina said she wanted to give everyone a chance to be in a performance.
“I try to get people that wouldn’t necessarily be comfortable on stage,” Drtina said.
Along with reproductions of actual 1940s shows such as those put on by Abbott and Costello, three commercials in “Radio Plays” were written by six students from West Junior High, Drtina said. She said this will also be the first play performed under new stage lighting in the auditorium.
“Radio Plays” begins at 7 p.m. Friday, March 11. Tickets are $3 at the door.
