SCHOOLS: BENTON ELEMENTARY
By ALAHANDRA JONES
Benton Elementary teachers and families met up after school hours to raise money at McTeacher’s Night from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 7. The McDonald’s on Business Loop 70 more closely resembled a cafeteria than a restaurant as teachers and students passed through.
“It’s really nice to see the families and kids outside of school,” said Benton principal Troy Hogg.
Fourth-grade teacher Bethany Morris shared a similar sentiment about the night.
“It’s a great chance to be with your family — hang out and talk,” she said.
Ten percent of the proceeds from McTeacher’s Night will go to the school. Hogg said the money raised will be used for field trips and school supplies.
“It’s a smaller school so we see the teachers in the hallways,” said Julie Miles, mother to first-grader Julian. “Nice to put a name with a face.”
Students greeted their teachers with hugs.
“We know our kids — we know all of them,” Hogg said. “They’re not just my kids, they’re our kids.”
Fifth-graders Lydia Lawrence and Roz Eggener said the teachers are the best part of Benton. “They treat us like normal people, not just kids,” Roz said.
