Due to icy roads resulting from sleet and snow Thursday, Feb. 24, West Boulevard Elementary’s Beds and Books event has been canceled.

The annual event, which has been rescheduled twice this year due to inclement weather conditions, was designed to help promote literacy and children’s interest in reading.

“We have lots of disappointed kids,” Fran Grant, who was involved in planning Beds and Books, said. “This is always one of our most well-attended events, with a wide age range of both students and parents.”

Attendees were encouraged to wear their pajamas to the event, and guest speakers from around the Columbia area had been invited to read stories to the children and their families. At the end of the night, each child was to take home a free book.

The event will not be rescheduled another time, Grant said.

“We will just have to try again next year for this particular event,” she said.
