The Roots ‘N’ Blues ‘N’ BBQ Festival kicked off in downtown Columbia with a bike parade aimed at raising awareness about bicycling and the advantages of going green.
The parade was led by New Belgium and Roots ‘N’ Blues ‘N’ BBQ cruiser winner Doug Sonnenberg. Sonnenberg won the bicycle in an online draw held on the festival’s website.
Sonnenberg said he was pretty excited when he heard about the results of the online draw and was enjoying leading the bike parade. Sonnenberg’s family accompanied him at the parade, his son Hayden often peddling faster than him.
Sonnenberg said he liked the bike.
“I’ll be using it for myself,” he said. “It’s a great bike.
About twenty bikers took part in the parade that started at Shakespeare’s Pizza at the intersection of Elm and Ninth streets. The bikers turned on Cherry Street and peddled down eight blocks to the KOPN Community Stage at Flat Branch Park.
The Missouri High Steppers, a drill team that performed and played drums, formed the rear of the parade. The drill team performed thrilling routines to entertain the audience once everyone reached Flat Branch Park.
