High Street resident charged with sexual assault

Shenghe Chang, 36, a resident of 510 High St., was arrested by Columbia police on Sept. 16 on suspicion of forcible rape, according to a Missourian report.

The 51-year-old woman, who reported the incident at 11:40 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, said she knew Chang, according to the Missourian article.

She was examined at University Hospital Friday morning, Columbia Police spokeswoman Jill Wieneke said. The woman suffered injuries consistent with being sexually assaulted, according to the probable cause statement.

Chang was charged with sexual assault, a felony, on Sept. 17, and his bond amount was set to $100,000, according to court documents. The bond also specified that Chang should not have any contact with the woman and was not allowed at her residence.

The woman and Chang are neighbors, and the reported incident occurred in her apartment, Wieneke said.

“Chang told officers he did not feel the encounter was non-consensual,” Wieneke said.

An initial arraignment was held on Sept. 22, and the preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 13 at the Boone County Courthouse.

As of Friday, Chang was being held at Boone County Jail.
