West Boulevard Elementary School is hosting Blues Residency during class time this week at the school, 319 West Blvd. N. The residency is part of the Blues in the Schools program, and this year West Boulevard Elementary has been included along with Grant Elementary School.
T.J. Wheeler, the visiting blues musician, will be teaching music classes Monday through Thursday this week. Students will learn about blues music and will have the opportunity to play and sing with Wheeler. Classes will take place in the music trailer.
The Blues Corps group will meet with Wheeler at 11:30 a.m. each day to learn and to write songs to be performed at the Roots ‘N Blues ‘N BBQ Festival on Friday, Oct. 1, and Saturday, Oct. 2.
Other classes will also be incorporating themes about rivers and blues into regular activities. Art classes will be based around the same topics, with projects set to be displayed at the festival.
To wrap up the week, the school will have an assembly at 2:50 p.m. Thursday in the school gym.
Grant Elementary will host the second week of Blues Residency the week of Sept. 27.
