The Russell Boulevard Elementary PTA Health and Fitness Committee kicked off their first monthly event Tuesday, Sept. 14, with a 1.1-mile walk or run.
About 80 families walked in unison to get students started on their half-marathon pledges.
“Tonight we’re walking six laps together [around the school’s track],” said Allie Gassmann, parent of fourth-grader Leila Gassmann. “But they’re on their own to walk 12 more miles.”
Physical education coach Tom Whelihan said the event encourages parents to get involved.
“It brings parents up to the school,” he said. “It really opens up the chance to build relationships.”
Students who finish walking or running their pledged miles by the PTA’s planned roller rink event on Nov. 15 will receive a ribbon and recognition.
