Russell Boulevard Elementary School’s monthly “Walk to the ARC” commenced Thursday, Aug. 26, with great weather and smiling faces.
Students, parents and faculty were eager to start off the year on the right foot, literally.
“The monthly walk is a way to promote physical activity for our students and their families,” said Edward Schumacher, principal of Russell Boulevard Elementary School.
The optional walk, which is about one mile, begins at the Activity and Recreation Center and continues throughout the neighborhood, ending at the school.
“We want to promote, to our students, that physical activity isn’t all about going to the gym,” said Schumacher. “Walking to school can be a great activity and fun for the family.”
Taina Crutcher, parent of students Caelleb and Tia, is an avid participant and believes that fitness is an important part of life.
“I want to teach my kids about lifetime health and fitnes,” Crutcher said. “I want them to be excited about being healthy.”
“It’s a good time to connect with students and their parents while getting exercise,” she said. “The walk can include the whole family.”
Maggie Drennan, who teaches first grade at Russell Boulevard, thinks the walk is a great way to promote community involvement.
Schumacher loves the informality of the walk.
“I get to converse with parents on a different basis, and the students see me as something other than their principal,” Schumacher said.
The Russell Boulevard Elementary community will continue to walk each month, rain or shine.
