Stephens College offers fun summer performances

“Ninjas welcome,” the invite beckons.

The Stephens College Summer Theatre Institute is presenting four events this summer that are free and open to the public.

Comprosed of Stephens College students that have completed their first year at the school, the institute is essentially a summer camp that gives acting students a chance to hone their skills for the stage.

On Friday, May 21, the students will host “An Evening of Children’s Theatre,” which features family-friendly fables and fairy tale performances. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Warehouse Theatre on the Stephens campus.

Kathy Vott, who helped with the institute planning, said the events are as beneficial for the students as they are enjoyable for the audience. She said various instructors teach skills from singing and dancing to stage fighting during the session.

“It’s very fun, always enjoyable and lighthearted,” Vott said. “I highly recommend it, even if you’re not a child, to come and see the girls. They’re very talented.”

The events include:

  • “An Evening of Children’s Theatre” on May 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Warehouse Theatre
  • “With Sprinkles on Top,” short plays inspired by ice cream, 7:30 p.m. June 4 at the Warehouse Theatre. Suitable for ages 12 and up.
  • “Combat!,” an evening of stage sword fights, comedy, fighting and drama, 7:30 p.m. June 18 at the Warehouse Theatre. Suitable for ages 12 and up.
  • “Musical Revue,” a song-and-dance sampler of Broadway’s most-loved material, 7:30 p.m. June 28 at Macklanburg Playhouse on the Stephens Campus

More information about these and other upcoming Stephens events can be found on their website and at the Stephens Box Office 876-7199.
